    He's just wrong. When we import something in a way that it isn't clear it's an import, we tend to Americanize the word - viz "karaoke" (English: carry-okie, Japanese: cara-OK).

    But when Wade-Giles replaced pinyin, we had no trouble going with Mao Zedong, Beijing, etc. Sometimes we handle both versions neatly, like with "Paris," and the expression "Gay Paree."

    Seems to be the case that Americans actually enjoy learning new pronunciations that reflect native accents, and there's something playful and interesting about "Sotomayor," like you have to take a half-second and prepare for it, then take a linguistic running start and vault over the final syllable. Not many words offer such fun for the speaker.*

    (*No problem in my case, but speaking generally it probably is. Polyglots and Spanish speakers get a bye on this one.)
