    Among the more than 50 military personnel who died in the fire were four members of the Fitzgerald family of Wilmington, MA, brothers home on leave for the holiday who all perished in the fire.

    (Ironically, only two weeks before, the light cruiser USS Juneau had been sunk at Guadalcanal, carrying to their deaths five Sullivan brothers of Waterloo, Iowa, although their deaths would not be made public until January 12, 1943.)

      the Navy would no longer put family members on the same ship.

      There was a documentary about this tragedy several years ago on TV (probably the History Channel or TLC) The oldest Sullivan brother had a child before
      he died; his grand daughter appeared at the end of the program.

        ...the death of the Sullivans also resulted in the military instituting the Sole Survivor Policy.  The SSP formed the premise for the movie Saving Private Ryan, which supposedly was losely based on the case of the Niland brothers.
