    I hate this attitude:

we the taxpayers are paying you to do the state's business, not to **insert whatever the writer cares to complain about**

This is treating people who work for the government as subhuman automatons, and it's exactly how the rightwing feels.  We're also not paying them to take a piss break, or eat their lunch, or take a few moments to say "Good morning" to a coworker and fix a cup of coffee.  So what?  We're also not paying them remotely enough to voluntarily crush their humanity (or, in the specific case at hand, her inhumanity).

Look, I get what you're saying, and in spirit I agree 100%. But we're definitely not paying people to take a piss break in someone's coffee, or eat someone else's lunch, or take a few moments to say "fuck you, darkie" to a coworker.

There is a line of what is acceptable behavior when you're on the company clock and this definitely crosses it.

We pay you to do work for us, so we control you, body, mind and soul.  That's what I object to, not criticism of the behavior.  The controlling attitude actually equates the offense with perfectly harmless behavior, because it puts sending racist emails on the same plane as sending happy birthday emails.  They're wrong not because of the content, but because they 'waste' the controller's resources.  This person should absolutely be disciplined, and probably fired, but for being a racist asshat at work, not for sending a non-work email at work.
