    ...This question might have been able to be posed in one of the other Ukraine diaries, or story on the main page.

    That being said, here is an answer for you, with the briefest of background from the NY Times...

    At a tumultuous meeting of the Central Election Commission, the government declared Prime Minister Viktor F. Yanukovich the winner of the presidential runoff, giving him 49.46 of the vote to 46.61 percent for Viktor A. Yushchenko. People in the chamber heckled the reading of the results.

    Yanukovich is the candidate of Putin's choice.  He is part of the old guard, advocating close ties with the former Soviet Union.

    Yushchenko is the "opposition" candidate you speak of.  He advocates, among other things, building Ukraine's relationship with the West, while recognizing the importance of their relationship with Russia.

    Since this diary is here, I might plug a blog, live from Ukraine.  Read it HERE.  This person is close enough that people from the protests are urinating in her back yard.  Hows that for first hand perspective?
