    You couldn't get Proust published today. Proust could barely get Proust published today. To say nothing of like, Tristram Shandy or Tom Jones, even Ginsberg would struggle.

    I mean, I'm on board with the notion that there's a dispiriting focus on quantity over quality, but we have our Pynchons and our Danielewskis (have you seen Only Revolutions??), we have publishing houses like Dalky Archive - fact is, the current system is pretty well-prepared to handle experimental fiction.  Getting these works carried by a major bookstore is another problem, but there's no shortage of people willing to publish difficult or non-traditional writers.
