  •  there's a reality gap (8+ / 0-)

between the Democratic leadership and the base.

The base knows these problems are urgent, because it is experiencing them, and senses that the solutions aren't nearly as hard as the leadership is making it out to be.

The leadership is ensconced in its bubble, obsessed with playing the game the same way it's been played for thirty years. It has no idea how angry and desperate the populace are. Its actions are not based on reality, but on preconceived notions about how things should be.

Hence, the growing discord--a discord between reality and illusion.

No question there is an element of corruption, but I also think - no I know - that there is a fairly robust group who are simply shackled by ideological thought and/or fear of being called "liberal".

That is what worries me the most.  Because you count on the honest people to step up and push to "do the right thing", but if they are pre-condidtioned to believe that "the right thing" is impossible and potentially political poison, then they will not - and the corrupt folks win the day.

Its one of the only professions that seems immune to automation, offshoring, outsourcing and reengineering. They have good hours and LONG vacations, too. Plus other perks.

If I was a patrician, I would say to my son.

          •  There has GOT to be major corruption going on (0+ / 0-)

I just PRAY that whoever would investigate it does.

These Senators and Congresspeople who have taken money from the contract killers and drug companies should step down.

            Why don't they resign, now?

Government employees are told not to take even small gifts from anybody.

Obviously these crooks played hookey during their orientations.

    •  I agree with you (3+ / 0-)

It seems to me that there truly is a disconnect--a serious disconnect--between the Democratic leadership and its base.  And this part of your comment is spot on (at least IMO):

It has no idea how angry and desperate the populace are.

The alliances we are seeing with our own eyes between the financial sector leadership and the Democratic leadership and the healthcare sector leadership and the Democratic leadership shows a level of disconnect that is rather frightening.  I'm truly at a loss to understand how, given the populist campaign President Obama ran, this disconnect came to be.  I didn't expect this at all.  And I'm more than a bit disilluioned with not just the Obama administration but the Democratic Congress and the Democratic Party leadership.  How can they possibly be so unaware and ignorant?!

tend to be arrogant and myopic.

It's the same disease that affected the Czarists in early 20th century Russia, and the Bourbons of 18th-century France.

They just cannot understand that things have changed, the world is no longer as it used to be, and they cling to the outmoded system that nurtured and succored them.

It's like the atavistic response of some trauma patients; they curl up into a fetal position in an attempt to return to the safety of the womb.

We're seeing that--the last gasp of the existing order, trying futilely to save itself.

        •  The problem we have it that unlike the people (0+ / 0-)

of Russia and France, Americans have been so brainwashed to accept the status quo that their level of anger will never make a difference, not in the short time.  Two hundred years from now maybe but we will all be dead.

We might want bread, in the form of a national single payer healthcare plan that covers everybody and is affordable.

But where is the PROFIT in that?

SO....Obama has other plans for us.

We have been presented with an incredibly costly "cake".

Unfortunately, it was FAR too little, FAR too late.

Really, in the long run, revolutions wars, etc, far too often set their countries back greatly because somehow, the rich and well connected always seem to be ahead of the game and come out on top. They play both sides of the fence.

I have no doubt that the fiercest advocates of revolutions and demonstrations are not infrequently just as evil as those who they seek to supplant. They are cut from the same cloth.

It is far better of a gradual process of understanding results in a peaceful process of evolution of laws and maintainance of the spirit of DEMOCRACY.. which I have always thought was basically COMMON sense.

Horse sense... If it doesn't smell right, its probably wrong.
