  •  A big part of the problem is that lots of people (0+ / 0-)

    look at their pay stubs and regard ALL of the difference between gross pay and net pay as "federal taxes." But in addition to Federal income tax, FICA tax, and state income tax (if their state has one) that difference can also include employee's share of health insurance premiums, contributions to a 401K or similar plan, and charitable giving that they voluntarily signed up for. In other words, purely voluntary expenditures.
