    I think that the corporate wing of the GOP has never been very comfortable with the neocons, and want to see as many of them as possible purged from positions of influence in the party.  The ascendancy of the neocons under Bush/Cheney forced Baker to keep a low profile.  You're seeing more of him now because the traditional conservative wing of the party is testing how far they can go with this.

    Since the Dirty Fucking Rubes (DFRs -- aka, the Tea Party crowd) is disproportionately evangelical Christian, I think it's a bit early for the traditionalists to get much traction.  But in the end, they will get the upper hand.

    But by now, we know how the Obama administration deals with those who would destroy it: it goes straight for the capillaries. --Krugman
