  •  Thanks! That (11+ / 0-)

is absolutely true. Part of the problem is we're so scared to be open that we're closeted around even those who support us. I know there were tons of people I could've come out to in high school but I'd been burned so many times.

    •  Once someone's out, there's no actual telling (11+ / 0-)

just who the people they come out to might slip that knowledge to. Intentionally or completely on accident.

My parents weren't entirely happy that I'd kept it secret from them for years that one of my friends was gay, because they thought it reflected my opinion of what they'd think about him because of it. When really, it was that several of us who'd been the first he'd come out to had an unspoken agreement that we weren't going to talk about him being gay anywhere near people we weren't sure he was out to. His choice who knew.

Hoping and praying that the empty chairs and empty tables in Iran when all is said and done are as few as possible.

managed it when I was in high school in the 70's.  I don't remember any of my several gay HS friends ever "coming out" to the non-gay members of our clan.  We had been together since about age 7 and just knew.  Interesting that we were all active in the Baptist church during this time - touring choir, drama group, the whole bit.

About 10-12 years after high school, my mom mentioned that she always thought I just never wanted to discuss it with her.  She had several gay friends of both sexes, too, and it just wasn't something we had cause to discuss.

Sometimes it's better to individually address a problem rather than just criticize our politicians for failing to do so.
