but should we be all be paying for trains that are used at 20% of capacity all day just for the convenience of going home midday once in a while?

Sounds to me like a poor allocation of scarce taxpayer dollars...

though I agree with the diarist.

I have no option to see friends in San Francisco without those weekend trains, without borrowing a car.  But if we're to say "well, friends, and those who commute to work on weekends, have to take a back seat to standard weekday jobs, when it comes to taxpayer dollars," then fine; but that still means that our San Francisco/Bay Area streetcars and buses, along with (I assume) many other urban areas nationwide, ought not to be allowed to fail.  If that takes the federal government stepping in and funding them, that's what should be done, IMO.

If I need the convenience of being able to go home midday once in a while, and there is no train, then I buy a car. Once I've sunk the many thousands of dollars into that proposition, I will just drive. Next thing you know, the peak trains are 20% of capacity.

The only reason the peak trains are viable is because the off-peak trains exist.
