  •  I don't think so (4+ / 0-)

My mother was raised racist in 1940's Atlanta.  She overcame it for a variety of reasons.  I think it's likely that most people are bred to be racist, rather than becoming racist on their own at a later date.  It's really a form of abuse.  So I do want to understand it as best I can.

Now that conjures up a lot of interesting images. LOL

I don't think I would say people are bred to be racist, but I do believe many people pick up these negative ideas from their parents and or peers. I also think there may be things that have taken place in their lives that have attributed to their behavior. I read a comment on another forum once where some guy was speaking about his hatred for Blacks. He attributed it to the fact a family member had been brutally murdered by a Black man. He even admitted he was being irrational for hating an entire group of people because of the action of one person but said, "that's just the way I feel." I actually felt sorry for the guy. That doesn't mean I excused or condoned his attitude but at least it gave me something tangible I could understand. If this guy made more of an effort to understand that Blacks are individuals, some good, some bad, maybe he would be less incline to blame me for something another person did. How can I ask someone to understand me, if I don't do the same for them?

That's what I mean--yeah.  When I was growing up, I used to hear lots of kids my age offer that "explanation":  I don't believe in interracial dating.  I just wasn't brought up that way.  or This is an all-white sorority, but we're not racist.  We just weren't brought up that way.
