  •  Wow. What a thoroughly obnoxious set of (11+ / 0-)

comments.  I haven't been one to complain about the "declining quality of discourse here," but this seems like a good impetus to start.

Two repeated themes that are particularly troublesome:

Well no fucking duh!!!  In other news, water is wet.

Yeah, my gut said it's true as well.  But it's remarkably disheartening that a bunch of otherwise intelligent progressives fail to see the difference between unsubstantiated hunches and high-quality, rigorous, empirical engagement with actual data.  Do I really have to explain this one?

Where are the crosstabs?  Where are the raw files?  What is this "researcher" hiding?  Etc.

These personal attacks against the professor -- whom I'm never met, for full disclosure's sake -- are borderline HR-worthy.  At the very least, they show an ignorance as to how academic research is conducted -- which, while totally understandable, should give you pause to assume the worst about a professional.  By the time the study is complete, it will be published in a peer-reviewed outlet.  Shortly thereafter, if not sooner, the researcher will release the entire data set to the public, along with a codebook specific enough for anyone to replicate any aspect of the research.  Meanwhile, the university's press office -- far removed from the academic side of things -- saw fit to put out a press release publicizing the findings.  Perhaps the release was premature -- but that says absolutely nothing about the quality of the research.  I applaud the diarist for contacting the prof directly and seeking answers.  Meanwhile, those of you impugning his credibility without a shred of evidence should take a step back and see what the diarist finds.

I don't care about your farm or mafia! Oh wait -- wrong forum.
