I just described the practices of the early Church.

And there was never a time when the followers of Jesus weren't embroiled in politics. The apostles were revolutionaries against Roman domination of Judea through its puppet Pharisees. Paul took that political fight to Rome, seeding secret resistance to Rome among all along the way, particularly Greeks. The Church in Rome helped undermine the old order until it gained the throne via Constantine's mother.

The Church has always been political. It has always had severe defects in its view of the actual world. The only "good old days" is, as usual, in the imagination of people who came later than the romanticized (pun intended) past. But, as I also said, there have also always been some admirable qualities to the Church, or at least to the core faith of many of the people who make up the Church.
