    culture. It's Melanne Velaneer. She heads the Office of Global Women's Rights at the State Department. What she means by that is that "culture" is often used as a relativist argument in defense of "honor" killings and violence against women abroad and here.

      And I probably could have been nicer about my criticisms (I love your healthcare stuff, btw).  

      I'm just an anthropologist who works in Jordan and gets annoyed when discredited ideas from the mid-20th century start getting thrown around.  I should have recognized you from the beginning and known that you weren't grinding an ideological axe against Arabs or Muslims.  Still, if this is an important issue for you, you might want to look into some of the feminist writing coming out of the region by people like Saba Mahmood, Lila Abu Lughod, Lara Deeb and Farha Ghannam.
