  •  A real filibuster would be great.... (12+ / 0-)

but the problem with that is that the Senate rules changed at some point and relegated the Mr. Smith Goes to Washington filibuster to fairy-tale land. The current rules give the filibusterers the advantage and place a huge burden on the majority. The minority only needs to have one person on the floor at any given time, while the majority needs to maintain a 51-vote quorum on the floor at all times. So the filibusterers get to go to the bathroom, meet with lobbyists, play golf, hold fundraisers, etc., while 51 proponents of the bill are stuck in session throughout the entire filibuster.

With 40 Hell Nopers filibustering, each speaking for, say 2 hours, it could go on for. e.g., 3.5 days with each one of the obstructionists being present for just two hours, whereas the Dems would be held hostage (51, taking shifts). So you say 80 or 100 days of that? The Rethugs would be more than happen to have all that time to hang with their bankster friends and plot the end of the world as we know it.

At least that is my understanding of it. Of course it doesn't make it impossible, but it sure ain't what it used to be.

There is no more important struggle for American democracy than ensuring a diverse, independent and free media. - Bill Moyers
