we could have avoided the Civil War.

How could they let a book like Uncle Tom's Cabin get published?

One man's hate speech is another man's truth.

I believe we have more to fear from a government that stifle dangerous speech than we do from any speaker, even Glen Beck.

We shall overcome, someday. Yes we can.

    •  It's not all equal (0+ / 0-)

As a society we can decide which types of hate speech we want to outlaw.

Hate speech against nazis isn't equal to hate speech by nazis.

Not in my opinion, maybe in yours.

        •  We will, as a society, politically. (0+ / 0-)

          As we decide everything else.

          •  We already decided (1+ / 0-)

by making the 1st amendment part of the constitution. You can no more declare an idea unfit for society than you can declare a religion unfit for society.

            •  Sure, we decided to make slavery legal (0+ / 0-)

and then we decided to make it illegal.

We're free as a society to change our minds and rework what the framers did at any time we choose.

It's not about declaring ideas unfit, it's about outlawing particular groups like the nazis and banning certain types of hate speech on television and radio just like we do with curse words.

It's pretty ridiculous to propose that we can ban the word fuck on TV but can't ban Beck from his mastabatory white supremacist eliminationist fantasies on TV. If we decided to as a society, we certainly could.
