Our attitude towards Cuba is silly and outdated.

I will say it strikes me you were looking for a fight.  You were bringing in "contraband" you knew you were not supposed to bring in and you lied on your Customs form.

Perhaps it was your defensive tone and fear at being caught that caused Immigration to treat you suspiciously.

Also, I can kill you with my brain.

i would argue it never made sense
nor have any of our policies toward latin america
      over the many decades.

      rapacious bullies, imho
we could have been a friend, a good example
but then that assumes there's something about usa culture that sets anything but a bad example

cuban policy just stands out as one of the dumbest

bought some Cuban cigars in Japan while he was in the Navy.  He returned to the United States in uniform and with the cigars in their original box.  Rather than try to hide anything, he brazenly declared the cigars, and their country of origin, on his declaration.  In his telling of the story, the customs agent stared at him, open-mouthed, saying "you know these are illegal, don't you?"  He nodded.  Maybe it was the Navy uniform, but the agent let him keep the cigars.  I smoked one myself.
