      because of urban sprawl the "dividing lines" are extremely blurry.  The state is becoming one megalopolous. As someone who grew up in the south part but now lives in the north part, I say the whole North v. South arguments are ridiculous and overblown.

        There have been at least 26 different proposals to split California.

        Perhaps the most radical suggestion, and also done facetiously, would make California a separate nation. This proposal was the brainchild of San Jose Mercury newsman Ted Bredt, who noted that California's resources and financial potential were larger than those of many nations.

          There are differences between the SF Bay Area and L.A. (like Dodgers vs Giants) but the politics are more similar than either is to the Central Valley or mountain counties. There are exceptions to the rule--Orange County is still more conservative than other parts of the coastal megalopolis, and Alpine and Mono Counties vote more progressive than other rural counties. But of course hardly anyone lives in Alpine or Mono and they are a bunch of DFH ski bums...
