If we all have skin in the game, we'll be less tolerant, let alone eager, to send young men and women off to war.

And I say this as a pacifist veteran with two draft-age children.

and while I feel for the 'skin' in the game, quite a few are happy to be there. Not all, just the psychopaths that love to kill.
But it is an all volunteer army and anyone joining today knows full well what they are going to be asked to do.
No, my thoughts are not just with them, but mostly the kids, and the animals that are in the line of fire so that the US military can keep it's pockets lined.
I especially have no sympathy for the contractors that are over there just to make money. Safety? My  ass
Hope this diarist enjoys the hike. I am doing the same after reading the 2 diaries yesterday that told us how fucked up our country and leaders are.

I too have 2 draft age sons.  The volunteer military works great in peace time.  But what I've seen since 9/11 is that this country, without much thought, introspection or hesitation, seems willing to put other people's children at risk.  If everyone's son and daughter (yes, females should be drafted too) could be sent to war, I know we would not be so quick to indulge our feelings of outrage, fear and jingoism.

My father-in-law was a pilot in WWII, Korea and Vietnam.  My husband spent 14 years in the AF as a fighter pilot.  We opposed this war.  My husband said that, if there was a draft for this war, he himself would have driven our sons to Canada.  But when wars are fought by OPC (Other People's Children), most of us have the luxury to not give a shit and not take a stand.

Bottom Line:  If there was a draft, war wouldn't look like the answer to every problem.
