    Carter was just running for his first election and things were looking up.

    The US has been going downhill since I was four.  Interestingly, the rest of the world has been getting a hell of a lot better over the same period.

      Today, it is 77.8

      Black American males lived an average of just over 63 years. Today, they live to nearly 70.

      Today, for the first time in US history, we have passed near universal health care.

      World illiteracy rates have halved in the past 30 years.

      In Cambodia in 1977, average life expectancy was 30 years. Today, it is 61.6 years.

      In Nigeria, less than 43 years. Today, more than 46 years despite more than doubling the population.

      In Burkina Faso, it was 46.6 years. Today, 55.6 years.

      We have a long way to go, but we are making progress.
