What kind of a place is this world? One where unspeakable and incomprehensible horrors happen all the time. So much so that there is no shiny city on the hill somewhere in the future that could possibly justify stuff like Auschwitz having happened in this world. Nothing could ever justify that - so there is no way this world can be fundamentally good. This argument may not hold for religious people, but I don't get how those tick, so I'm not going to talk about them. As far as I'm concerned, the world is a messy place in which horrific soul-extinguishing stuff goes down all the time.

It is also an amazingly beautiful place and one full of miracles everywhere I look.

And there's the process. There is cultural evolution which over time has produced more and more complex social structures and institutions. All the genocide and slavery and oppression humankind has suffered through the millennia of its existence are in fact byproducts of this evolution. Therefore, like I said, there's no way this process can be fundamentally good. But it is still happening, and it is what it is. And there is no question that it has produced, over very very long periods of time - for it is a very slow process - societies which are more democratic, less authoritarian, and more geared towards the principle that people are best allowed to contribute whatever it is they do best and otherwise left to pursue happiness in whatever fashion they see fit as long as they don't stuff and eat their neighbors.

Again, I don't think that kind of stuff happens because there is some benevolent force at work - it seems rather obvious to me that there is no such force. So it must be happening because over time, societies organized according to democratic structures are simply more successful.
