BP oil spill may not be capped until Christmas, expert warns

The prospect of a lengthy timescale to cap the well reinforces the views of Carlos Morales, the head of exploration at Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex). The company was the operator of the Ixtoc I well in 1979, when 3.3m gallons of oil spilled into the Gulf. It took nearly 10 months to bring the blowout under control.

Morales is now sharing technical information with BP in an attempt to help it block the Macondo leak. He has warned it could take "four to five months" for a relief well to cap the spill.

I hope the address to the nation indicates that the August timetable may be unrealistic. It's better to under promise and overdeliver, rather than keep revising increasingly worse case scenarios.

It hasn't been reported to the public that way, which is unfortunate, but anyone who's been getting their information from better news sources always knew this.

August presumes that the very first killbore will successfully find its target.  That is a gigantic presumption considering the very small size of the target, way down in rock where we can't see.

BP and the Obama administration have been following a drip-drip-drip model of communication, which I don't think is helpful.  Sure, people don't freak out as much initially, but I find aggravation spikes up exponentially with each subsequent drip.  I prefer simply ripping the band-aid off.

I prefer ripping the band-aid off too. Going from a 5000 barrels a day estimate to 20,000 and from August to Christmas, is like saying we thought you had a skinned knee but it looks like we'll have amputate. No kiss can make BP's boo boo heal faster.

There's nothing that makes Christmas any more reasonable a date than August, apart from the fact that it's later in the year.  But it could just as easily be next March (please no).  There is no information that makes Christmas a likelier date.

The truth is simply, they're going to keep drilling killbores until one is successful, and when one will be successful, they don't know!
