I remember flipping channels one time -- or maybe I was being subjected to the channel, the way you're sometimes captive to FoxNews in an airport terminal or public bar -- and saw some Tea Party rally where Sean Hannity was holding forth about the nobility of these (pasty white) Americans.

The production values were epic; a swooping crane camera moved up and shot the Tea Partiers from a wide-angle, bird's eye perspective, each of them hooping and hollering like they had just watched a Top Gun/Red Dawn double feature. Sean was hoisting the mic out to them like some kind of televangelist, asking them to register their discontent.

But the whole thing, as grassroots as it was made to seem, was fabricated from the bottom up as a newsworthy event by Fox News itself. It was part of a set of rallies that they themselves had set up, sponsored, and shot from beginning to end. And the slick camera angles and telegenic hosting did much to obscure the wingnuttery lurking beyond: the signs that questioned Obama's birthplace, the calls to armed insurrection, all the kookery of the rightwing fringe.

Some basic media literacy among Fox News viewers might help to mitigate or neutralize the effect of this kind of Potemkin rally. In the meantime, though, a lot of people are utterly oblivious to the material resources being used to back this movement from sympathetic corporations and media voices.
