    to Senator K's bill reminds me of the DDT battles after Rachel Carson exposed it (well, others had railed against DDT before, but she really put it in the news). DDT was everywhere; I remember as a kid how they'd drive around the neighborhood and spray for mosquitoes, just like formaldehyde surrounds us in our daily lives. Like the stalling today, the chemical industry back then launched all kinds of PR stunts, claiming that DDT was safe, and, of course, it would be too expensive for them to find alternatives. A familiar argument: it's too expensive not to kill people.

      In Miami they were frequent occurrences. Those mosquitos could and did kill. You could see the mosquito cloud coming.
