  •  My condolences to you and your family. (17+ / 0-)

Alzheimer's is a sad and mysterious disease. My mother n law passed away in March from Alzheimer's. Knowing her for 20 years before seeing her in the final stages of the disease I can say that Alzheimer's does appear to begin rather innocently. My mother n law started to display rather strange behavior at least 8 yrs before it was diagnosed. She was always a perfectionist so some of her changes in behavior was not suspicious.

It was when she started showing signs of paranoia and impulsive behavior that we all thought something was up. My father n law was still alive at the time so he covered for her. When my father n law passed away suddenly then my mother n laws behavior really changed. She did the best she could dealing with the death of her husband. She was not able to be alone and had a lot of anxiety over it.

My husbands siblings did not want to believe their mother may have Alzheimer's. I came upon an article about Alzheimer's which described a lot of the symptoms that were apparent in my mother n law. The most startling one was that the death of a spouse will accelerate the disease due to the stress and that the deceased spouse was usually covering for the one with the disease. I shared what I had read but they were not ready to accept it. It took 4 yrs for them to finally open up to what it might be and by then it was in a serious stage that required being placed in a group home for Alzheimer's patients.

It was heart breaking since we had to take her dog in and she did not understand why she could not go home. That is really common for patients in the beginning. My mother n law lived 3 years after the diagnosis.
