    I'm sorry for your loss, Lefty Coaster. I lost my father six months ago, and while it wasn't easy, I was fortunate in that he was mentally and physically doing well up until less than a year before the end. I'm sorry you and your family had to go through so much.

    Believe it or not, George Will once wrote the most beautiful essay I've ever read on what it was like to lose his mother to dementia. Never mind his abhorrent politics; on this topic, he expresses feelings that transcend political differences. My apologies if it's too wrenching in its description of how dreadful dementia is; I found it very moving because of the clear, thoughtful way he writes about it and because it ends on a positive note, and I thought perhaps reading the reflections of someone who lost his mother in a similar way might be meaningful for you or for others in a similar situation here.
