  •  Guess what? (6+ / 0-)

The disaster didn't start with the monsoon.

    It started with...

Those dams and canals and irrigation diversions that went underrepaired and underfunded for the last thirty years or so... The new projects that evaporated between the good intentions and the lack of will.

The deforestation of the hills and the draining of wetlands...

The diversion of development funds to the military.

The Punjab was once the breadbasket of Pakistan...

This disaster has been going on for decades.

Certainly, send money now - and lots of it, children are dying.

But next time lets all learn the lesson - spend a dime of prevention and education and conservation as steadily as possible, and you won't have to spend a single fucking dollar on burying a drowned little kid.

Even leaving aside the effects of climate change, flooding of this sort is still a not-entirely-natural disaster.

This is all the more reason to support worldwide reforestation and watershed protection.

many, many climate scientists are saying the flooding is part and parcel of their projections for two decades.  See this thread for links to National Geographic and the Nation articles on the topic.

WE are the fuck-ups with our addiction to oil and refusal to lead on finding alternatives. Don't blame the carbon-less economy of Pakistan.
