    •  You know, if the Democrats are smart, (4+ / 0-)

if the GOP decides to pull a government shut down stunt, then the Democrats all go out immediately and point out that there are tens of thousands of troops in Afghanistan who would be left high and dry by such a move.

The Republicans want to abandon the troops who are currently fighting their war.

      •  Or we could just start bringing them home. (7+ / 0-)

        That would accomplish two goals.

        •  Would love that, but it is not going to happen. (1+ / 0-)

Never was going to happen and now even if Obama et al had a change of heart it really won't happen with the GOP in charge of the purse strings.

          •  In what sense are they in charge of the purse... (0+ / 0-)

...strings?  They may have part of the legislature after today.  We have the other part, and 100% of the executive.  I'd still rather be us than them.

Did you completely miss the Spring 2007 debate about the Dems having the power to wind the war down in Iraq by defunding the military activities?  While the Republicans claimed that deferring to the President on the wars was "customary", they always had the power to shut Bush's wars down.  They have tremendous power to dictate what happens, in fact.

way I could see that happening is if the GOP were to approach the situation logically and get the troops out and then shut the government down, but the GOP acting logically will happen when pigs fly.  So, I stick with my earlier prediction until pigs fly.

        •  That costs money, too (0+ / 0-)

I believe the previous President was prepared to let our troops do without supplies if Congress did not vote his war supplemental.

          •  That's because he wanted to stay there (0+ / 0-)

So it's up to Obama to decide how much he wants to stay there.

      •  They already voted to defund the war (0+ / 0-)

rather than repeal DADT.  When Kerry voted against a war appropriation w/o a timetable, it was treason.

      •  Oops (0+ / 0-)

that whole "Democrats being smart" thing, how's that working out for ya?

Not a fuck load of evidence in 2 years that Democrats are smart.

After a brief spark two years ago, the US appears likely to revert to the mean.

        Mean, vicious, dumb and lazy.

      •  They tried that before... (0+ / 0-)
And Newt NEVER "manned up" to "owning" the shut-down that happened in late 1995. Because he and his fellow House Repubs didn't, Clinton hung 'em out to dry in the 1996 State of the Union, and it helped ensure his re-election that year.

If Repubs are looking to hand Barrack the same kind of issue to shove down their throats, fine with me; they need to be prepared to suffer the same fate in 2012, AND re-lose the House (if in fact they DO gain control of it today) all over again.
