...because I just don't remember a John McCain who was on (what I considered to be) the right side of any issue.  You might be better qualified to vouch for his record, because there might be periods in his career that I am unfamiliar with...  I have never considered him to be genuine.

BTW, love your sig line.  When I was a kid, I was always so anxious to grow up and hang out with the "smart people".  Imagine my surprise when I found out the awful truth... : )

At one time he was actually an independent-thinking Senator.  He worked on issues with Democrats,
There was campaign finance reform (worked with Feingold),
Opening up Vietnam (he worked with Kerry)
And he really wanted to have Lieberman as his running mate.
And a few other issues.  He used to be difficult to label politically, but over the years has sold himself out more and more.

      •  well he weaseled out of the Keating 5 scandal (4+ / 0-)

        didn't he?

and what was the scandal on the Indian Affairs committee that has been repeatedly mentioned here? the 7000 pages of evidence that he won't open to investigation, because he's protecting someone - maybe even himself?

        •  Oh, I'm not defending him. (0+ / 0-)

I'm only saying that he had a few bright moments, which are now utterly obliterated.  The irony is that he himself "refudiates" his own independent positions.
