  •  The WoD is largely about disenfranchisement. (10+ / 0-)

In my opinion, a lot of the continued pressure for this kind of stupidity is about disenfranchisement of whole segments of the population. More "socially accepted" groups within the population use the drug laws to throw lower status groups in prison and deny them their right to vote, so that they are less of a threat to their power. They used to do this directly through institutionalized racism; when they lost that, they largely switched to a massive "law enforcement" regime aimed directly at many of the same people who were targeted by racist laws in the past. The War on Drugs is specifically designed and implemented in order to dilute the political, economic, and social influence of the lower status classes in this country.

I don't do drugs at all, and I think this is a travesty and a human rights issue.

    •  Blacks specifically have been (8+ / 0-)

targeted in urban areas - bombarded with guns, alcohol, heroin, cocaine. Back in the 60s and 70s people like Eldridge Cleaver told us what was going on.

The dynamic has changed a bit now, as the organized crime network of drug smuggling and gun running has been taken out of the hands of the whites who started it, but the criminal network exists because the institutional corruption inside government still allows it to exist.

If we do not deal with the massively corrupt institutions of government which are behind these criminal networks and prop them up, nothing can ever change.

Fixing the US and world economy is easy. Tax speculation, not labor.
