  •  Robert Siegel interviewed Schakowsky on NPR (6+ / 0-)

    November 11.

    Robert Siegel talks with a member of the commission, Illinois Democrat Jan Schakowsky. She says much of the report does not have the support of other commission members and many of the proposals are "nonstarters."

    •  I heard that report (11+ / 0-)

      At this part;

      SIEGEL: What about the earned income tax credit, which is, in effect, the negative income tax, the tax that low income earners, the money they receive back from the government rather than paying in?

      Rep. SCHAKOWSKY: I think theres broad consensus that the earned income tax credit for low income people, as well as the child tax credit, are not those that we could eliminate. And I am certain that there are going to be more. Certainly the mortgage interest deduction is very controversial. I would object to total elimination of that.

      That was when I learned they were talking about taking out the earned income tax credit at the same time that the debate was leaning toward extending tax cuts to the rich.

      I could not believe my ears. When will they present poor and middle class paying a higher percentage of their wages in income tax so the rich will have more money to hire us?
