I agree that this will probably end well in the long term, but the flight to Illinois only worked because it took the Republicans by surprise.  They won't get surprised again.

I'm interested in hearing your perspective, as one on the ground, of how an additional week with the focus on the budget giveaway to the Kochs would play.

Let me also take you to the side for a moment and whisper a bit about what I'm doing (and others can do) with respect to this particular diary.  If the Dems go back whistling and thinking "do-dee-oh, glad that's over" and then the Republicans pull this sort of shrewd parliamentary maneuver on them, then the Dems look like boobs for having been so credulous.  Again: the public hates weak.

If nothing else, if the Dems take the precaution of saying this:

"look, we know that if the Republicans wanted to be the biggest group of butt-boils in state history they could pull this trick on us, but we're just going to trust that if they do so that the unions will know we did our best and the public will be so horrified that it will punish them for years"

then if the Republicans do pull some sort of trick play then the Dems don't look weak, they just look like people who were counting on the Republicans' honor.  If nothing else, I want the Dems to say "there's some talk that they could do this, but we're coming back anyway because we think the public won't stand for it."

You Badger Staters can write out the final act of this first play in the cycle however you want.  You've earned it!  But I hope that you keep in mind that Republicans don't mind looking a little evil so long as they can make the Democrats look weak.  Don't let it look like you got taken to the cleaners.  Make it harder for the Republicans to profit by humiliating you through a trick.

Simply getting this idea out there, in my view, makes it harder for the Republicans to get away with this sort of plan.  (And I really do like the idea of one more week devoted purely to focusing on the Koch giveaway!  Make them hurt!  But I recognize that it's up to you guys up there.)

Unplug the Koch machine! It's swallowing people's money!

The reason the 14 have wide support is because what they did had a specific purpose - stall to allow citizens to realize what was going on and take action. What they did was within the law, but it does make some people uncomfortable and support will erode if they extend their mission to stopping all fiscal bills from passing. Wisconsinites don't want that. We want a functioning, clean, open government that plays by the rules.

They did their job. It's up to us, now, to continue respecting the rule of law and to overturn these decisions through the courts and the ballot box. The FitzWalkers will continue breaking the law, because they have no other choice, and we will prevail, one way or another.

Trust me, there are a lot of things in the works. My guess is we'll see the extension of some current labor contracts that don't conform to the new law (on the assumption that the law is invalid), forcing someone on the right to file law suits and defend their unconstitutional law in court.

You can also be sure that hearings on the new proposed budget will last long, long hours with thousands of us signing up to testify.

      Just speculatin'...

Where are the jobs, Governor Walker???

and well said.  Again, I'm only setting two conditions above: at least a week flogging the "giveaway to the Kochs" horse and then "swear on your honor that this isn't a set-up."  I don't think that the week's delay hurts much, given what they'd be bringing up, but at some point I absolutely do defer to your judgments from within the state.  I think that discussing this is healthy, though.

I'm hoping that you get a book out of this that I can put on my shelf next to WineRev's about the Minnesota recount!

The book idea has crossed my mind. I first thought it was kind of a crazy idea that I could write enough to fill a book, but now I think it would be a challenge deciding what to keep out.
