If we put resources into the research, it will be there soon.  There are ways to power cars by using solar to collect the electricity and store it in batteries.  The only issue is that the batteries are not yet as energy dense as they need to be to go as far as we would want them to in the US.  That said, the technology is already there for this type of thing on a commuter car basis.

    •  But those cars will still need oil for the engine. (1+ / 0-)

Get rid of that and you've got something.

Even a car like the Chevy Volt, which has a back up gas generator to recharge the battery, does not use oil as a lubricant.

I believe that the range of electric cars will increase dramatically with new battery technology.

If battery tech existed that let you transport energy as easily as you can with gasoline, there would be no need for a program.  Everyone would be driving electric already.

      Except for Harley riders.

... as gasoline becomes more expensive and battery technologoy and economics improve.

Imagine how much the air quality in cities like Delhi and Sao Paulo would improve if scooters and motorcycles went electric.

I am not so certain about battery tech.  There is no guarantee chemical battery tech will ever allow enough ergs to be packed into a small enough, light enough, affordable package.
