  •  This is a fairly silly claim: (0+ / 0-)
Afghanistan is important, not because it has oil, but because it stands between rich natural gas and oil fields in Turkmenistan and the the Arabian Sea and has been in talks with Unocal since the mid-nineties to create a pipeline to export these resources.  Not to mention national security problem of being so dependent on oil producing nations, many of whom coordinate their actions through OPEC.

Any company or person interested in creating an oil or natural gas pipeline across Afghanistan is completely insane. Anyone corporate doing even a basic Cost/Benefit analysis would see that it's a dumb idea.

First, there's going to need to be a huge security presence to build the damned thing. Then, you'll need to patrol it constantly to keep it from being blown up.

The security costs would exceed any profits gained from such a venture.

The oil companies don't care who controls Afghanistan, just that it is stable.  Currently they're not going to do anything, but if/when it stabilizes, they'll begin the conversation again.  I didn't say I doubt the sincerity of the reasoning behind invading Afghanistan (though a find/capture mission would've been a lot more cost effective for us), or do I think the oil companies interests were served in the invasion.  I do, however find that they're almost certainly interested in stability in the region.

I'm not sure why you included the last sentence in the excerpted quote.  Why do you find that "silly"?

      •  Sorry, I misunderstood you. (0+ / 0-)

I concede the point, and made the mistake of thinking you were arguing for something else.

I apologize. Thanks for the clarification.
