Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission is a landmark 2010 Supreme Court decision overturning campaign finance rules that limit political speech by corporations.

The decision resulted from a case where the nonprofit political (501(c)(4)) organization Citizens United created and distributed a film critical of Hillary Clinton. The film, and the marketing of the film, violated the "electioneering communication" sections of the McCain-Feingold Act, defined as a broadcast, cable, or satellite communication that mentioned a candidate within 60 days of a general election or thirty days of a primary. Lower courts had found that the film had been produced explicitly to affect the election, and thus considered it akin to a political advertisement.

Citizens United overturned several previous Supreme Court precedents.
