Posting a Diary Entry

Daily Kos welcomes blog articles from readers, known as diaries. The Intro section to a diary should be about three paragraphs long, and is required. The body section is optional, as is the poll, which can have 1 to 15 choices. Descriptive tags are also required to help others find your diary by subject; please don't use "cute" tags.

When you're ready, scroll down below the tags and click Save & Preview. You can edit your diary after it's published by clicking Edit Diary. Polls cannot be edited once they are published.

If this is your first time creating a Diary since the Ajax upgrade, before you enter any text below, please press Ctrl-F5 and then hold down the Shift Key and press your browser's Reload button to refresh its cache with the new script files.

ATTENTION: READ THE RULES.

  1. One diary daily maximum.
  2. Substantive diaries only. If you don't have at least three solid, original paragraphs, you should probably post a comment in an Open Thread.
  3. No repetitive diaries. Take a moment to ensure your topic hasn't been blogged (you can search for Stories and Diaries that already cover this topic), though fresh original analysis is always welcome.
  4. Use the "Body" textbox if your diary entry is longer than three paragraphs.
  5. Any images in your posts must be hosted by an approved image hosting service (one of: imageshack.us, photobucket.com, flickr.com, smugmug.com, allyoucanupload.com, picturetrail.com, mac.com, webshots.com, editgrid.com).
  6. Copying and pasting entire copyrighted works is prohibited. If you do quote something, keep it brief, always provide a link to the original source, and use the <blockquote> tags to clearly identify the quoted material. Violating this rule is grounds for immediate banning.
  7. Be civil. Do not "call out" other users by name in diary titles. Do not use profanity in diary titles. Don't write diaries whose main purpose is to deliberately inflame.

Do the Math

On November 7th, we’re hitting the road to jumpstart the next phase of the climate movement.
It’s simple math: we can burn 565 more gigatons of carbon dioxide and stay below 2°C of warming — anything more than that risks catastrophe for life on earth. The only problem? Fossil fuel corporations now have 2,795 gigatons in their reserves, five times the safe amount. And they’re planning to burn it all — unless we rise up to stop them.

This November, Bill McKibben and 350.org are hitting the road to build the movement that will change the terrifying math of the climate crisis. Join us.

So now we know who Agent Shirtless is.  And Broadwell has lost her security clearance.  Kelley is no longer allowed to enter the MacDill base with just a wave. Petraeus is going to testify but it's all behind closed doors anyway.  CIA denies that they are still in the secret prisons business.
Veteran F.B.I. Agent Helped Start Petraeus E-Mail Inquiry

DOVER, Fla. — The F.B.I. agent who spurred the investigation that led to the resignation of David H. Petraeus as C.I.A. director is a “hard-charging” veteran who helped investigate the foiled millennium terrorist plot in 1999, colleagues said on Wednesday.

The agent, Frederick W. Humphries II, 47, is also described by former colleagues as relentless in his pursuit of what he sees as wrongdoing, which appears to describe his role in the F.B.I. investigation involving Mr. Petraeus. Suspecting that the case involved serious security issues and was being stalled, possibly for political reasons — a suspicion his superiors say was unjustified — he took his concerns to Congressional Republicans.

A Pentagon official said the security clearance of Ms. Broadwell, a West Point graduate and officer in the Army Reserve, had been suspended pending the outcome of the F.B.I. investigation. F.B.I. agents on Monday night carried boxes of documents and a computer out of the house she shares with her husband and two sons. The law enforcement official said that Ms. Broadwell had cooperated with investigators in their effort to remove all classified material, which by law cannot be kept in an insecure facility.

As some other news organizations and blogs start moving away from the junk and are  analyzing the back story, connecting dots, etc., DailyBeast keeps focusing on the sex scandal shiny object catnip showing its true colors for the crappy propaganda tabloid that it is.  Squirrel!
Paula Broadwell, Eminem & More Spurned Lovers Who Went Ballistic

Paula Broadwell isn’t the first. Rejected paramours tend to act out—in really inappropriate ways. From Rielle Hunter to YaVaughnie Wilkins, Paula Froelich reports on our favorite top ten.

20,000 meals per day.  Yes, 20,000.
"Occupy Sandy" Volunteers Contribute To Relief Efforts At Sunset Park Church

"We dispatch hundreds of volunteers a day to the affected areas," said community organizer Juan Carlos Ruiz. "We have developed a network, an organic network, with the communities affected."

"We're getting donations from all over," said volunteer Alex Shwarzstein. "I've talked to people as far away as Orlando who sent trucks up here with stuff."

Occupy Sandy organizers say they have also been making hot meals for storm victims and prepare about 20,000 meals a day.

Workers World, IAC deliver aid to Occupy Sandy
[...]

New York — Members and supporters of Workers World Party and the International Action Center helped to deliver more than a van-load of material aid that these groups had gathered to Occupy Sandy — the Occupy movement’s response to Hurricane Sandy — on Nov. 11.

Occupy forces are very much engaged in efforts to support survivors of the storm. On Nov. 11, they issued a call for volunteers to help house the more than 40,000 people who are now or will soon become homeless. At the distribution site in Brooklyn activists held a consciousness-raising, anti-racist political orientation on how to present the aid to the affected communities. A young white man described how the term “looting” is a racist term that is mainly used against Black and Latino/a communities.

Occupy Sandy spearheads Rockaway med center

A doctor volunteering at the center, David Ores — or Dr. Dave as he is known by organizers and patients — said efforts to treat residents can keep some of them out of emergency rooms, freeing up resources for others. He pointed to providing medicine to patients with asthma and diabetes as an example.

“It’s a minor thing, but it prevents a big mess,” he said.

He spent his second day volunteering at the center Friday, seeing patients and writing non-narcotic drug prescriptions for people who needed them. He said he was prescribing supplies for up to one month and once he first sees a patient at the center, he is able to write prescriptions over the phone.

Donning a leather biker jacket, he gave a short lesson to volunteers on how to spot a diabetic patient who may be in immediate need of medical care based on their regular insulin dosage.

“Believe whatever they say,” he told them, saying it would be rare to come across a diabetic patient who was unsure about his or her dose.

Meanwhile, another Occupy Sandy organizer, Sofia Gallisa, said Friday the group was sending nurses and other volunteers to go door-to-door to figure out where medical care was needed.

Vampire Weekend, Dirty Projectors, the Walkmen Unite for Occupy Sandy Benefit

Occupy Sandy for a benefit show on November 17th at the Brooklyn church St. Ann and the Holy Trinity, Pitchfork reports. Real Estate, Cass McCombs and Devendra Banhart are also set to perform.

Scahill, always a must read.  Look beyond the shiny objects, folks.
The Petraeus Legacy: A Paramilitary CIA?

While much of the media focus on l’affaire Petraeus has centered on the CIA director’s sexual relationship with his biographer, Paula Broadwell, the scandal opens a window onto a different and more consequential relationship—that between the CIA and the military’s Joint Special Operations Command. In a behind-the-scenes turf war that has raged since 9/11, the two government bodies have fought for control of the expanding global wars waged by the United States—a turf war that JSOC has largely won. Petraeus, an instrumental player in this power struggle, leaves behind an agency that has strayed from intelligence to paramilitary-type activities. Though his legacy will be defined largely by the scandal that ended his career, to many within military and intelligence circles, Petraeus’s career trajectory, from commander of US military forces in Iraq and Afghanistan to the helm of the CIA, is a symbol of this evolution.
[...]
Retired Army Col. W. Patrick Lang, a former senior defense intelligence official, says that Petraeus’s arrogance—“smoothly concealed beneath the appearance of the warrior scholar”—made him deeply unpopular among the military’s high-ranking officers. Dismissing the media’s portrayal of Petraeus as a “super soldier” and great military leader as “phony bullshit,” Lang describes him as the product of a military promotion system that encourages generals to think of themselves as “divinely selected.” “In fact, he didn’t write the COIN manual, the surge was not the main thing in improving the situation in Iraq…. They sent him to Afghanistan to apply the COIN doctrine in the same glorious way he did in Iraq, and it hasn’t worked. So, if you look beneath the surface from all this stuff, it’s just a lot of hot air. There are great generals, but this guy is not one of them.” Arriving at the CIA, Lang says, Petraeus “wanted to drag them in the covert action direction and to be a major player.”

Israel killed the son of a BBC correspondent with their air strikes.  The picture of him in agony, holding his baby son, tears my heart out.
Jihad Misharawi, BBC Arabic Worker Pictured Holding Baby Son Omar Killed In Gaza Strike

Debate

Remember when progressive debate was about our values and not about a "progressive" candidate? Remember when progressive websites championed progressive values and didn't tell progressives to shut up about values so that "progressive" candidates can get elected?

Come to where the debate is not constrained by oaths of fealty to persons or parties.

Come to where the pie is served in a variety of flavors.

"The smart way to keep people passive and obedient is to strictly limit the spectrum of acceptable opinion, but allow very lively debate within that spectrum."  ~ Noam Chomsky
