If you did not catch it, Slate published a very intriguing article about efforts to suppress research on gun violence. Here's the link to the whole piece: http://www.slate.com/...
The part that got me is here:
PT: Have you experienced personal attempts at intimidation for your research? How about colleagues?Jesus! Threats to an expert -- Garen Wintemute, director of the Violence Prevention Research Program at the University of California, Davis Medical Center -- who just simply wants to do research. Talk about thuggery!
GW: I won’t speak for colleagues. The president of one of the largest handgun manufacturers in the country once told me, face to face, how much money he had committed to an intimidation effort and advised me to keep my life insurance paid up. There was a time when federal law enforcement agents recommended that I wear a ballistic vest. There is a wanted poster on the Internet.
This convinces me that the gun industry is much like the tobacco industry in its efforts to lie to the public, intimidate and suppress opponents, and reap the profits.
