Posting a Diary Entry

Daily Kos welcomes blog articles from readers, known as diaries. The Intro section to a diary should be about three paragraphs long, and is required. The body section is optional, as is the poll, which can have 1 to 15 choices. Descriptive tags are also required to help others find your diary by subject; please don't use "cute" tags.

When you're ready, scroll down below the tags and click Save & Preview. You can edit your diary after it's published by clicking Edit Diary. Polls cannot be edited once they are published.

If this is your first time creating a Diary since the Ajax upgrade, before you enter any text below, please press Ctrl-F5 and then hold down the Shift Key and press your browser's Reload button to refresh its cache with the new script files.

ATTENTION: READ THE RULES.

  1. One diary daily maximum.
  2. Substantive diaries only. If you don't have at least three solid, original paragraphs, you should probably post a comment in an Open Thread.
  3. No repetitive diaries. Take a moment to ensure your topic hasn't been blogged (you can search for Stories and Diaries that already cover this topic), though fresh original analysis is always welcome.
  4. Use the "Body" textbox if your diary entry is longer than three paragraphs.
  5. Any images in your posts must be hosted by an approved image hosting service (one of: imageshack.us, photobucket.com, flickr.com, smugmug.com, allyoucanupload.com, picturetrail.com, mac.com, webshots.com, editgrid.com).
  6. Copying and pasting entire copyrighted works is prohibited. If you do quote something, keep it brief, always provide a link to the original source, and use the <blockquote> tags to clearly identify the quoted material. Violating this rule is grounds for immediate banning.
  7. Be civil. Do not "call out" other users by name in diary titles. Do not use profanity in diary titles. Don't write diaries whose main purpose is to deliberately inflame.

Please begin with an informative title:

Say it with me: So I saw this thing on Facebook that got me thinking. I dunno if Facebook ever meant to be diary-fodder and was content to be a provider of pootie pics, but nonetheless, there we have it. As a result I'm asking you to state publicly and for the record... "Have you ever committed a RAoK?"  Follow me below the dingledoodle squigglie dKosagnocchi dividerthingie fold after a word from our sponsor...

Here at Top Comments we strive to nourish community by rounding up some of the site's best, funniest, most mojo'd & most informative commentary, and we depend on your help!! If you see a comment by another Kossack that deserves wider recognition, please send it either to topcomments at gmail or to the Top Comments group mailbox by 9:30pm Eastern. Please please please include a few words about why you sent it in as well as your user name (even if you think we know it already :-)), so we can credit you with the find!
Intro

You must enter an Intro for your Diary Entry between 300 and 1150 characters long (that's approximately 50-175 words without any html or formatting markup).

That would be Random Act of Kindness. Something that conveys no benefit upon the doer except the warm fuzzy feeling that altruism engenders. No tax receipts, no public glory, no lets-get-this-into-the-campaign-material. What Judaism would, if my Unitarian Universalist self understands what I've read, consider a mitzvah.

What I saw on Facebook was a reference to Italians going into a coffeehouse and ordering both their own beverage as well as a "caffe sospeso" (suspended coffee). Later the suspended coffee is given, when asked for, to someone unable to afford one on their own.

My thoughts on the Suspended Coffee movement are mixed (nice way to do unto others versus accounting headache/potential for abuse), it nonetheless got me thinking about RAoKs. Do they have to be done to "help someone less fortunate"? Does it have to be anonymous with respect to the recipient of your kindness? Are there limits? What other RAoKs have I heard about?

While I haven't ordered a suspended coffee for anyone, I HAVE on several occasions added to my grocery checkout an item the person ahead of me removed when the total came up higher than expected. I've put a few quarters into an expired meter when I noticed the parking police making rounds.

I've also been the recipient of kindnesses. Back when drivers paid tolls by giving money to action tollbooth workers, I once reached the booth to discover my travel had been covered by the driver ahead of me. My kids have been given tickets for rides or games at amusement parks by people leaving before they'd had a chance to use them.

Last Friday one of my dogs slipped out the front door and went racing down the street. By "down the street" I do quite literally mean down the middle of the road at 9am on a busy main road. As the kids and I were racing after the dog, two cars stopped and two men got out. One of the men stood right in the path of 45lbs of speeding hound, arms spread, and caught her while the second watched for traffic. He walked to the sidewalk, gave the dog to K1 (who is much faster than her mother!) and without a word got back into their cars and drove away. I have no idea who either of them were, but I do know my dog likely would have been hit by a car if she'd gone two blocks further into a busy intersection. Neither driver had to stop... they simply did.

What sorts of Random Acts have you been a part of, on one side or the other? Can you think of examples that might inspire each of us to put a smile on another's face tomorrow?

Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down.
