Firearms Law and Policy is a new group formed by LilithGardener, OregonOak, and Glen the Plumber for advocating sensible and doable changes in current firearms law and policy with the goal of reducing firearms deaths and injuries. There seem to be two broad camps of people who care about firearm law and policy - those who seek safety from the protection of a gun and those who think safety will come with fewer guns. More guns vs. fewer guns is the debate, yet both sides are concerned about safety, and rightly so. Is there enough middle ground to work with? I think there is, and I think once we get through talking past each other, we can identify solutions that will save lives and reduce injuries while honoring the ideals of both camps.
The first step is to listen to each other. The Firearms Law and Policy group adopted Wee Mama's and akadjian's guidance on communicating. This compendium of firearm-related diaries published in the last two weeks is another step in the direction of listening to each other. (If I missed your diary, send me a message, and I'll include it in the next roundup.)
My suggestion is to read something written by someone you don't usually agree with. Consider where this person is coming from that he or she would have a point of view that is so different than yours. What would cause you to feel this way? Most of all,
Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.
The firearms diaries from the last two weeks are below the fold.

A better title would be Gun Makers Fail (10+ / 0-)
I've been following David's reports on Twitter for months, and it seems to me that his efforts highlight two things about the gun debate in this country. One thing is that too much of the public discussion focuses on the use of guns in crimes, though so much of the damage done with guns is accidental. (I won't get into the suicide issue, as I know David gave up tracking suicides.) The second thing is that there is something that Congress can do to lessen the number of gun accidents in the US. And Congress could do this without limiting anyone's right to own a gun... Continue reading A better title would be Gun Makers Fail

It's Back-to-School time! Many areas of the country saw their kids back in school during this past week, while elsewhere, students will be returning over the next two weeks. So it's only fitting to note the two particular kinds of GunFAIL that coincide with the season. First, there's the old gun-in-school problem. We had eight of those in primary and secondary schools around the country. Specifically in St. Louis and Ferguson, MO; Griffin, Sandy Springs and Atlanta, GA; Mobile, AL; Winston-Salem, NC, and; Spring Hill, KS. From the post-secondary world, we have the story of the Texas Tech students who thought it would be fun to fire guns off the balcony of their off-campus apartment. Let college kids bring their guns to school? Sure. Why not?... Continue reading GunFAIL XXXIIIFive of 44 guns discovered by TSA at airports around the country this week.
Nature vs Nurture: Are Guns in the Blood? by BadKitties
I grew up in Manhattan, with rifles and shotguns in my closet. There was a gun rack and a chest in Daddy's library filled with guns. There was a glass-topped table in the living room with eighteenth-century dueling pistols nestled in velvet-lined cases. We had a beach house in the Hamptons, with a 50-foot pistol range in the basement, and even MORE guns. There were guns in my closet, my brothers' closets, and under our mattresses. Every single one had a trigger lock. The ammo was kept in locked boxes in the beach house attic. In the city, the ammo for the pistol he carried was on a high shelf in a green Army box in the pantry... Continue reading Nature vs Nurture: Are Guns in the Blood?
These last few weeks many of the nation's eyes have focused upon Colorado Springs, CO, that weird corner of the U.S. where contradictions and political battles seem to be periodically waged before getting franchised nationally. Outside the usual electoral cycle our community has become the next reluctant political battleground in in what I am beginning to describe as America's ongoing Cultural Cold War.
Tuesday's NY Times published a detailed overview for audiences outside of Colorado to get an idea of our significant election even (link here. Tuesday morning NPR did a similar broadcast version of essentially the same storyline. Both offered a foreboding potential that two Democratic legislators could be recalled for their leadership in Colorado's recent guns safety legislation. Until the last couple of weeks I too was seriously worried and thought that the party leadership and politicians had made strategic mistakes drawing a battle here, now I believe the nation will be surprised in a huge way... Rogue PA Police Chief Calls for Military Coup to Begin Next Week in DC by Michael Morrill
Mark Kessler has been something of a media darling the past few weeks. The small town (Gilberton, PA) police chief has posted a series of flamboyant videos that have threatened elected officials and private citizens whom he has called “libtards.” The media have largely ignored these threats, instead focusing on what they call Kessler’s “potty-mouth” language and his fascination with anal sex.
But the real story is not the cussing. Nor is it Kessler’s threats to Nancy Pelosi, John Kerry or to “shoot a libtard” (although he should be prosecuted for those threats).
The real story is Kessler’s call for a military coup. Kessler has called for a massive march to be held next week in Washington, where he hopes the military will join with the people to “give the tyrannical government 48 hours to step down.”... Shoddy gun paper excites right wing by danps
Conservatives discovered a six year old Harvard paper recently and immediately praised its claims. Unfortunately, it is an extremely fact-challenged document.
Cross posted from Pruning Shears.
There is new interest in a 2007 study by Don B. Kates and Gary Mauser. "Would Banning Firearms Reduce Murder and Suicide?" was published in Harvard's Journal of Public Law and Policy and has been cited recently on a number of political blogs, message boards, even on a popular right-leaning economics site. I encountered it at Writer Beat, one of the sites where I cross post. Announcing the publication by "Harvard, Obama's Alma Mater" (apparently for the benefit of those who didn't already know the place was a suspicious liberal bastion), the author summarizes its finding as "it's not guns that kill people," a commonly repeated phrase elsewhere... Great news! An ex-felon and white supremacist gets caught stockpiling guns, assault weapons, ammunition and body armor. And lists of Jewish and black leaders in Detroit! Well, that's great. Another potential domestic terrorist nipped in the bud. I suppose this must be the result of stronger gun laws, since we hear incessantly of the woeful burden of law crushing liberty-loving gun enthusiasts underfoot.
Alas, no...the arrest and conviction of Richard Schmidt on gun charges had nothing to do with gun laws. It was pure coincidence, the result of FBI investigation into counterfeit NFL jerseys and other knock-offs Schmidt sold at a sports memorabilia store in the local mall. Yup, another recall of guns for design issues.
This time it is the Springfield Arms 3.3XD series 9mm and .45ACP Automatics. These Guns/handguns/pistols/thunder sticks/whatever have an issue that "could experience an unintended discharge during the loading process when the slide is released, or could experience a double-fire when the trigger is pulled once."
This "condition" is supposed to be rare and from exceptional conditions, however gun forums have discussed this issue since 2005.
