Itzl AlertingAs you can see by Itzl's concerned look, this group is for us to check in at to let people know we are alive, doing OK, and not affected by such things as heat, blizzards, floods, wild fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, power outages, or other such things that could keep us off DKos. It's also so we can find other Kossacks nearby for in-person checks when other methods of communication fail - a buddy system. Members come here to check in. If you're not here, or anywhere else on DKos, and there are adverse conditions in your area (floods, heatwaves, hurricanes, etc.), we and your buddy are going to check up on you. If you are going to be away from your computer for a day or a week, let us know here.  We care!

If you'd like to be part of the Itzl Alert Network, please leave a comment asking to join, or send us a message asking to join. We'd love to have you. The bigger our network, the less likely someone will be stranded all alone.

First day of spring!  Huzzah, the end of winter is in sight!

Winter will, of course, try to dump its coldest weather on us now as a farewell, and as a reminder during the hot days to come that winter will be back.

For our region, it was a warm winter.  We've had winters this warm, and warmer, so that wasn't unusual.  What's unusual about it is how dry its been.  We've never had water rationing in the winter before that I recall, but we do this year.

But back to spring!

The spring plants are beginning to unfurl.  Tomorrow's Spring Feast will consist of dandelion greens, fiddleheads, and wild violet salad with a Roma tomato that ripened just in time (my tomatoes grew all year outside, not cold enough to kill them off and sunny enough to keep them fruiting) and a deviled egg, the teeny baby potatoes and carrots that overwintered, and a slice of veal I bought from the Food Co-op. The beverage is lemonade made from winter lemons to remind us that winter weather is still here.  And the dessert?  A lemon fool - whipped cream folded with a lemon and eaglebrand custard, garnished with home made graham cracker chickies.

How will you celebrate the first day of spring?
