What will they say next?
The other day I was cleaning out a closet at school and came upon a dusty anthology. Flipping through it, I noticed an interesting entry called, "The Parable of the House." Intrigued, I began to read:
Once upon a time there were five students who decided to rent a house together. They signed a lease with the rent divided equally and agreed that the rules of the house would be decided by majority vote of the tenants. Soon after they moved in, the group had a meeting. A proposal was made for everyone to chip in $5 per month to buy and maintain cleaning supplies for the house. This allowance would buy things like dish washing liquid, bathroom cleaner, mops, brooms, etc. Along with a rotating schedule of cleaning responsibilities, the house would be maintained.
However, two of the students vigorously objected to the requirements, arguing that the rules infringed upon their individual freedom. But the resolution passed 3-2 and became part of the rules of the house.
But when the time came to collect the $5 fee and do the cleaning, the two students who objected to it refused to participate. The other three became angry, stating that the pair were not living up to their promise to abide by the rules. Without the contributions, there was no money for cleaning supplies. Soon, the sink was filled with dirty dishes, the toilets and tubs were filthy, dust covered every available surface, and the floors were covered with grit and grime. The garbage overflowed because there was no money to buy garbage bags.
The two who refused to cooperate blamed the whole mess on the ones who had voted in favor of the rules. They claimed that it was the rules that had caused the problem, but offered no suggestions on how to solve the cleaning problem without contributions from everyone. The other three pointed out that a majority decision had been made and everyone had to abide by it, and that, if the rules were implemented, the house would be cleaned. But the naysayers refused to budge, and bad feeling between the two groups intensified and the house got dirtier.
Soon the rent would come due. The two who opposed the cleaning rules threatened not to pay the rent unless the rules were revoked. The other three said that the threat was suicidal blackmail, and they would all have to pay the price of breaking the lease if the rent were not paid. Everyone would suffer. Still, the other two refused to cooperate, and the house got grimier and the atmosphere grimmer.
A few days before the rent came due, the landlord tore himself away from watching football on TV and porn on the internet long enough to stop by and check on his property. He was shocked at the condition of the house and asked to speak to the students. After hearing both sides of the argument, the landlord was outraged that he might not get his rent and that his house was being neglected. He realized that not only were the two uncooperative students the problem, they were also either unbalanced or stupid. Before he left, he told the five students that they could either cooperate, clean up the house, and pay the rent, or he would evict them.
The three who felt they were playing by the rules appealed to the landlord, saying, "It's not our fault. We are willing to do our part. We can find two people who will cooperate to take the place of these two."
The landlord scratched his chin and said, "I'll have to think about it."
After the landlord left, the two deadbeats said to the others, "If we cooperate, what do we get in return?"
The other three were flabbergasted. "You mean besides living in a clean house with the rent paid?" they asked. "Nothing! Why would we give you anything for doing the necessary, responsible thing and playing by the rules?"
The pair loudly exclaimed, "You don't expect us to give in without getting something in return, do you?" and turned their backs on the others and walked off in a huff. Tension continued to mount over the next several days.
By the day the rent was due, the two recalcitrant students had been arguing with each other for some time about what to do. The other three students said, "The time has come. Are you going to pay the rent or not?"
The truculent duo went off to a room to be by themselves, blaming each other for their situation as they went. The argument went on until just before the rent deadline. Finally, the two emerged from the room and said...
Unfortunately, at that point in the book, a page was missing. So I don't know what happened. I was hoping maybe some of you Newdies™ had read this story and could let me know how it turns out. I'll be a good sport and offer my conjecture in the Tip Jar, but I am anxious to know how it really ends.
What will they say next?
