In recent weeks there has been a lot of speculation about Donald Trump’s obsession with attacking the National Football League because of players protesting police brutality in communities of color. Is it because he knows his rabid base doesn’t give a damn about racial injustice? That years ago his bid to buy an NFL team was rejected by the other team owners? Simply driving a cultural wedge to distract from the disaster that is his presidency? Smart money is on the first reason, but whatever the case, his animus may soon spread across the sports’ world spectrum because for Donald Trump, the shit just got real:
Before Trump turned professional athletes into his political targets in recent weeks … he had been privately losing their teams’ business. The trend has sapped his hotels of revenue and big-league buzz, a survey of teams by The Washington Post found.
In all, The Post found that 17 teams from across the four major sports had stayed at Trump properties in recent years. Now, at least 16 are no longer customers.
A small bright spot in a time of seemingly endless bad news.
