Melissa McCarthy had better be ready for another Saturday Night Live appearance, because White House press secretary Sean Spicer is back at it. While FBI Director James Comey was talking to the House Intelligence Committee at a hearing in which he’d confirmed an investigation into connections between the Trump campaign and Russian attempts to influence the 2016 elections, Spicer gave yet another blame-deflecting, truth-busting, laugh-if-you’re-not-crying-too-hard press briefing. Spicer told reporters that “following [Comey’s] testimony, it’s clear that nothing has changed”—which might be true if you’d known all along that the Trump campaign was under FBI investigation, but otherwise seems like a questionable claim.
Spicer aggressively stood by Donald Trump’s claims wild accusations that he was wiretapped by the Obama administration—and railed against dastardly leakers who let the nation know about things like Trump’s national security adviser talking to the Russian ambassador.
On the Trump campaign’s Russia ties:
Wow, they really gave volunteers and people with minimal roles some serious titles on that campaign, because Paul Manafort was Trump’s campaign chair and Michael Flynn was named national security adviser pretty damn fast after the election.
Spicer also strenuously tried to blame Democrats for having been targeted by Russian hacking, continued to push a lie about Hillary Clinton having “signed off on the deal that gave the Russian company one-fifth of the U.S. Uranium supply,” and he defended Trump’s golfing habits. For real:
Everything is someone else’s fault! Everything Donald Trump does—even golfing in Florida every weekend—is keen strategery designed to further national interests! Donald Trump’s inauguration was the largest crowd ever in the history of the world!
