There is not enough contempt in the world with which to meet this World Refugee Day statement from Trump Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. As the Trump administration is arresting and prosecuting asylum-seekers after stealing their terrified children, Pompeo claimed that “We will continue to help the world's most vulnerable refugees, reflecting the deeply held values of the American people.”
Also, Pompeo said, “commitment to the world’s most vulnerable individuals remains a critical component of America’s national security policy.” The United States is keeping babies in cages, separated from their parents, but sure, “commitment to the world’s most vulnerable individuals.” The statement does not mention Central American refugees, focusing on Syria—though Trump banned Syrians from entering the United States—as well as the Rohingya and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Pompeo opened by saying that “we join the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees”—the day after the United States formally announced that it’s leaving the U.N. Human Rights Council.
So the real question is … did Pompeo write this as a joke?
