Campaign Action
There are now four separate allegations of sexual misconduct against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, one that is under investigation by Montgomery County, Maryland police. But Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is preparing to go to the floor Monday afternoon to join popular vote loser Donald Trump in voicing his support for Kavanaugh.
As of now, the line is going to echo Trump, that the allegations are "totally political," and that "I am with him all the way." He's got the odious Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) chiming in calling it a "smear campaign" by the Democrats, who are "playing hide the ball." One might remind Sen. Hatch that it's Republicans who are covering up well more than 90 percent of the documents related to Kavanaugh's political and professional record, refusing to allow the public to see what exactly Kavanaugh was up to in the lawless Bush administration. What Democrats forced into the public eye was enough to show that Kavanaugh has repeatedly lied while under oath.
Here's one problem for Republicans and their attempts to call this a partisan "smear" entirely orchestrated by Senate Democrats—the latest allegations are from a witness who went to law enforcement directly, (the report from Montgomery County doesn’t specify who “investigators” looking into the witness claims are, but the Montgomery County police chief says he’s not aware of an investigation) who didn't go to committee Democrats.
Right now, the Republicans out there blustering are the usual hyper-partisans—Tom Cotton, Lindsey Graham, Orrin Hatch, and of course Trump. McConnell appears to be ready to join the chorus, but the votes he has to worry about—Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Jeff Flake, even Ben Sasse—are all staying mum. Any two of them can end this right now, can help McConnell cut his losses and move on.
It's time to end McConnell’s leadership. Please help with $3 to take back the Senate.
