This is an email I just composed to David Brock, founder of
Mediamatters.org.
I was reading an article today in Salon on David Bossie, the republican political operative.
I was outraged by the fact that the NY Times still portrays him as a credible source to unsuspecting readers after his involvement in the lies and fabrication of Whitewater. Then when I returned to my office today I was handed a printout of an email by a co-worker that depicted all of Theresa Heinz-Kerry's charitable contributions to organizations that support terror and anti-American causes - the source was WorldnetDaily.
I was thinking to myself that since mendacity has become such a cottage industry of right wing what we really need is a "Credibility Index" - a page that lists the top 100 most egregious fabricators of truth in journalism.
It can list all of the past fabrications and mistruths of a certain author so the reader can appropriate the proper credibility to their articles. I was thinking of doing it myself but then I thought it would be a perfect addition to your website since you are already doing a great job of documenting these transgressions and you can add a search function for people to read each individual transgression. What the index will provide is a quick and easy resource for the average concerned citizen to get a birds-eye view of the credibility of their source as well as creating an aggregate in order to punish the worst offenders. Please let me know if you are interested in this project. I thinks it would be a perfect addition to your site and a great weapon in our fight to reclaim democracy.
