Even Eminem does GOTV

Tue Oct 26, 2004 at 11:20:31 AM PDT

Eminem's new video is amazing. Truly. Even if you think you don't like hip hop.

Post mirrors if you've got 'em. I know they must be out there.

Update: Sorry about the infected link. Mea culpa.

Also, from the comments:

We need this video on MTV

Go here to nominate it for TRL.

Go here to nominate it for MTV's hip hop request show.

Scroll to the bottom, click "Other", and enter Eminem for artist and "Mosh" for song title. Vote it in as many times as you can!

    •  Bush has refused to go onto MTV (none / 0)

John Kerry has been interviewed twice by MTV, according to their website. In addition, his daughters went on TRL yesterday (I wish they could have unveiled this video). Yet Bush has so far refused to appear on MTV, and his daughters have also refused. Which is probably good because they are so fucking stupid. But it just goes to show how little confidence they have in their candidate, that they can't even send him out for an interview with Gideon Yago.

I had forgotten just how timeless Buffalo Springfield's lyrics were...

        "For What It's Worth"
        Buffalo Springfield

        There's something happening here
What it is ain't exactly clear
There's a man with a gun over there
Telling me I got to beware

I think it's time we stop, children, what's that sound
        Everybody look what's going down

        There's battle lines being drawn
        Nobody's right if everybody's wrong
        Young people speaking their minds
Getting so much resistance from behind
I think it's time we stop, hey, what's that sound
        Everybody look what's going down

What a field-day for the heat
A thousand people in the street
        Singing songs and carrying signs
Mostly say, hooray for our side

It's time we stop, hey, what's that sound
        Everybody look what's going down

        Paranoia strikes deep
Into your life it will creep
It starts when you're always afraid
You step out of line, the man come and take you away

We better stop, hey, what's that sound
        Everybody look what's going down
        Stop, hey, what's that sound
        Everybody look what's going down
        Stop, now, what's that sound
        Everybody look what's going down
        Stop, children, what's that sound
        Everybody look what's going down

  •  Lyrics... (none / 1)

Can you give me a lyric link that doesn't require me to install suspicious third-party software on my computer?
    •  These lyrics are pretty close (4.00 / 2)

And to the Republic for which it stands
      One nation under God
      Indivisible?
It feels so good to be back..

Scrutinize every word, memorize every line
I spit it once, refuel, reenergize, and rewind
I give sight to the blind, mind sight through the mind
I exercise my right to express when I feel it's time
It's just all in your mind, what you interpret it as
I say to fight you take it as I? gonna whip someone's ass
If you don't understand don't even bother to ask
A father who has grown up with a fatherless past
Who has blown up now to rap phenomenon that has
Or at least shows no difficulty multi task
And juggling both, perhaps mastered his craft slash
Entrepreneur who has held long too few more rap acts
Who has had a few obstacles thrown his way through the last half
Of his career typical manure moving past that
Mister kiss his ass crack, he's a class act
Rubber band man, yea he just snaps back

Come along, follow me as I lead through the darkness
As I provide just enough spark, that we need to proceed
Carry on, give me hope, give me strength,
Come with me, and I won't stear you wrong
Put your faith and your trust as I guide us through the fog
Till the light, at the end, of the tunnel, we gonna fight,
We gonna charge, we gonna stomp, we gonna march through the swamp
We gonna mosh through the marsh, take us right through the doors

To the people up top, on the side and the middle,
Come together, let's all bond and swamp just a little
Just let it gradually build, from the front to the back
All you can see is a sea of people, some white and some black
Don't matter what color, all that matters is we gathered together
To celebrate for the same cause, no matter the weather
If it rains let it rain, yea the wetter the better
They ain't gonna stop us, they can't, we're stronger now more then ever,
They tell us no we say yea, they tell us stop we say go,
Rebel with a rebel yell, raise hell we gonna let em know
Stomp, push up, mush, fuck Bush, until they bring our troops home come on just . . .

We gonna mosh through the marsh, take us right through the doors, come on

Imagine it pouring, it's raining down on us,
Mosh pits outside the oval office
Someone's trying to tell us something, maybe this is God just saying
we're responsible for this monster, this coward, that we have empowered
This is Bin Laden, look at his head nodding,
How could we allow something like this, Without pumping our fist
Now this is our, final hour
Let me be the voice, and your strength, and your choice
Let me simplify the rhyme, just to amplify the noise
Try to amplify the times it, and multiply it by six
Teen million people are equal of this high pitch
Maybe we can reach Al Quaida through my speech
Let the President answer on high anarchy
Strap him with AK-47, let him go
Fight his own war, let him impress daddy that way
No more blood for oil, we got our own battles to fight on our soil
No more psychological warfare to trick us to think that we ain't loyal
If we don't serve our own country we're patronizing a hero
Look in his eyes, it's all lies, the stars and stripes
They've been swiped, washed out and wiped,
And Replaced with his own face, mosh now or die
If I get sniped tonight you'll know why, because I told you to fight

So come along, follow me as I lead through the darkness
As I provide just enough spark, that we need to proceed
Carry on, give me hope, give me strength,
Come with me, and I won't stear you wrong
Put your faith and your trust as I guide us through the fog
Till the light, at the end, of the tunnel, we gonna fight,
We gonna charge, we gonna stomp, we gonna march through the swamp
We gonna mosh through the marsh, take us right through the doors

And as we proceed, to mosh through this desert storm, in these closing statements, if they should argue, let us beg to differ, as we set aside our differences, and assemble our own army, to disarm this weapon of mass destruction that we call our president, for the present, and mosh for the future of our next generation, to speak and be heard, Mr. President, Mr. Senator

Got no problem with it for specific tasks; there are some sites that require it or work better. But even with the security features jacked up, browsing strange sites with IE is like tapdancing through a minefield. Use Mozilla Firefox and you'll never go wrong.

    •  Promoting this video is a great cause! (none / 0)

It's like a free campaign ad if it gets aired.  This is so much more important than a CNN poll.  Comeon Kos let's get to work!
    •  We don't need to work on this (none / 1)

This juggernaut doesn't need the help of Kossacks. Understanding that this is true is understanding why this election is different, and why the polls are not correct. This video will have an effect on young voters, not because we push it, but because it will enter into their mediascape and be distributed fractally. The effect of this new media infrastructure has likely already outstripped any efforts we could mount. I suggest we all get back to doing things that NEED our help.
      •  You are so correct (none / 0)

This is sooo much bigger than D-Kos and any sites we can freep.

The timing is perfect too, GOTV stuff can be kind of preachy, it doesn't weather well.  Most of the target audience will be seeing this for the first time Thursday or Friday, and if they are anything like me, will not be able to keep re-watching it over an over again.

        •  You are right about timing (none / 0)

Marshall is making a big play. Really big. Big enough to fit his ego. And he IS big enough to make it, and have an effect. He understands his audience down to the base genome. He knows the attention span, the mode of distribution...I can't say enough about how much of an impact this will have. Look at the imagery at the beginning of the video. The research that leads him to the conclusion is a pastiche of media clippings, headlines, pictures. That's the nature of the mediascape and of the flow. he's connecting. Very cool. I don't care for eminem for a lot of reasons, but this has shown me something new about him. I've never doubted he was smart, but this is just a new side: his smarts put to good purpose. I also like the way he puts Kerry on notice at the very end. Its like he's saying, don't make me raise this army again.

I didn't realize the depth of involvement of GNN. Amazing work, and amazing that M&M would throw his considerable weight and rep as an "outsider" behind such a project. Hopefully he performs this song and comes out and endorses Kerry for President. That would make news. In addition, I'd love to see him say "Fuck Bush" on live TV, though they may give Em a 5-second tape delay in case he decides not to censor himself.

It will be memorable television, I think.

    ...you've lost middle America.

Powerful stuff. I'm amazed there hasn't been more of an uproar about this on the campaign trail (yet, I guess...)

The imagery and lyrics are about as harsh as anything I've seen in the mainstream media... even moreso than F911.

    •  Harsher than F9/11 (none / 0)

Yep.  Check the scene on the t'v. in the eviction notice part... bin Laden as a cardboard cutout with fake scenery that falls away revealing Colin Powell in a news studio.  The message isn't that Bush didn't get bin Laden, it's that bin Laden is a prop.

The voice of Mosh spends a lot of time on fathers, too, contrasting Mathers' family history with that of Bush's.  Mosh attempts a psychoanalysis of Bush.  Regardless of how accurate that may be, it's interesting.  A personal attack in rap usually depends on a specific kind of insult.  Mosh dismisses Bush as not worth battling.

      •  The Bin Laden portion (none / 0)

would probably be the most controversial, along with the line "maybe we can reach Al Qaeda through my speech".

Wingnuts and thugs would interpret these to say that Eminem thinks Bin Laden isn't real or that we need to have a dialogue with Al Qaeda. In fact that isn't Eminem's position at all. His position is that we should have killed Bin Laden instead of simply used him as a way to distract from other problems. You notice how the TV cuts away from Bush's speech with yet more "Terror Alerts". But these terror alerts are shown to be fake, a way to keep us afraid, to distract us from the corruption of the Bush years.

Here is what Eminem recently told Rolling Stone:

I think he [Bush] started a mess.  America is the best country there is, the best country to live in.  But he's f*kin' that up and could run our country into the ground.  He jumped the gun, and he f*ked up so bad he doesn't know what to do right now. He's in a tailspin, running around like a dog chasing its tail. And we got young people over there dyin', kids in their teens, early twenties that should have futures ahead of them. And for what? It seems like a Vietnam 2. Bin Laden attacked us and we attacked Saddam. We ain't heard from Saddam for ten years, but we go attack Saddam. Explain why that is. Give us some answers.

... then you need to pressure Eminem, not MTV.  MTV's videoshows are all on payola, and Viacom isn't going to expose themselves to the political risk in order to satisfy our write-in campaign.

What will make them think twice is if Eminem warns them that he won't send future videos to MTV or make appearances on MTV programming, unless they air his video.

  •  all i got to say is WOW (4.00 / 2)

I have always liked Eminem.. i'll never forget the first time that I heard one of his songs.  He's a lyrical genius, in my opinion.  His songs so effectively channel the obvious angst and anger that he feels.  He's one of the rare, truly genuine musical artists of our time.

This video really hit home with me.  Thoughout I could just feel the anger just welling up in me and ready to burst.  The animators for this video should be commended, talk about using exactly the right images.. I mean by the end i was so emotional.. it's hard to describe.  Just a mixture of pure anger and sadness.  Tears were literally welling up in me.  How many music videos can you say that about??

Why settle for the truth when you can have Truthiness???

it would seem pretty amazing. He is justly criticized for some harsh and sexist views, but the reason he rises to the top is that he is wickedly brilliant. His word-play is pretty much unmatched.

Buddy Eminem is the lyrical equivalent of a moab and, in my humble opinion, the most radical political voice in America today.

  •  Holy crap. (none / 1)

My problem with Eminem has always been that he wanted so badly to be thought to be a rebel, fighting some righteous fight, but it always seemed to be the righteous-in-his-eyes-but-not-in-mine fight against anyone who disagreed with him or criticized him at all.  Not unlike Bush, come to think of it.  But now he's picked an actual fight, and I respect him for that.

I really welcome the addition of his significant talent to this fight.  He can for damn sure do more good than I can.

    •  Eminem raps only to be seen as a rebel? WTF? (3.33 / 3)

Your argument smacks of Republicanism.  Time to think for yourself.

      • Kerry was anti-war not because he cared about America and her values and soldiers and veterans, but because he wanted to use the bloodshed of American soldiers to vault himself into political life.

      • Eminem sang his songs and dared to be outrageous not because he actually believed what he was saying, but because he wanted to 'fight some righteous fight' in order to be 'thought a rebel'.

      • Richard Clarke didn't write his book to improve the discourse on American security, but to make a lot of money and get back at President Bush for something.

It's like listening to Republicans talk about anyone they don't agree with.  The list goes on and on.

And Gosh forbid someone actually carry a chip on their shoulder to help propel them to fame and fortune.  That would not only be extremely common, that would be much worse than that - that'd be like, so, Eminem.  And why is he acting so righteously anyway?  What right does he have?

But now he's picked 'an actual fight'?  That's good.  Let's pretend that everything he's ever rapped about has been to promote his image as a rebel.  Nothing about race, free speech, socioeconomic issues, social norms, or anything else of importance - to you, anyways.

Of course, I'm glad you approve.  Is it ok if we listen to some Eminem now that he's picked a real fight?  That is, a fight that you approve of?

      Just asking...

      •  Uh, overreacting much? (4.00 / 2)

WTF, indeed? Your claim that I'm not thinking for myself is insulting, ill-informed, and leads me to really just want to reply to you by saying "oh, bite me."  But because I'm marginally an adult, I won't.  Similarly, what's up with the implication that I'm being elitist because I don't like Eminem?  Let me assure you that in my circles, liking country music, which I do, is seen as being a lot more declasse than liking rap and Eminem in particular.  Seems like you're basically taking a page from his book: "Someone who has no power over me has said something I disagree with.  How about if I frame it in the most extreme way possible so that I'm twisting their words to mean something they didn't say, and then I'll act like their words -- not action taken against me, but simple words -- oppress me and it's a brave and manly thing to insult them."

I make no claim to have deconstructed the lyrics of every song he ever released.  But yeah, when even the gentlest critique anyone offered of his fairly rampant misogyny was routinely met with personal insult and bragging about how he, Eminem, was not going to be intimidated by the likes of Christina Aguilera saying that maybe it was inappropriate to be fantasizing about killing his daughter's mother or whatever she said, that's empy rebellion.  That's setting up straw men and then being proud you can knock them down.  Admittedly I haven't paid any attention in several years and maybe things have changed, but for the brief time I paid attention, he was acting like a bully and then trying to get credit for being all brave.

    •  In other words (none / 0)

You didn't like how he fought for himself.

You don't approve that he acted out his violent instincts lyrically instead of physically. He should have attended anger management classes instead, or something. I guess he can afford them now that he's made millions giving angry teens a vent for their frustrations.

By the way, the hubub you remember was instigated by Lynn Cheney and the Christian Right. Check out his response to them in "America". Maybe you'll agree with the lines:

"You laugh now, but just wait 'till your ass gets drafted. I'm 28 - they'll take you before they take me."
As he says, rap music was fine in the harlem but people started getting nervous when white girls in Boston started listening to it.

You want him to convey an ethic of hard work? Try "Rabbit Run".

There's an undercurrent of disaffection in this country, and seeing the Eminem video shows how strong it is becoming. Seems to me if we keep on with another Bush term we're going to see the kind of unrest in the streets like during the 1960s. God, why did Bush have to make this country relive Vietnam?

I saw it up there but it wasn't until today that I actually bothered to see the video. I have been emailing my family all morning to see it. My dad (who is 60) thought it was powerful and that's pretty amazing to me. I'm glad this got centered on this page.

I was watching something on CSPAN the other day and I can't remember who it was but it was addressing the HipHop GOTV message and someone's concern that on the one hand they do great things with that but on the other they have songs about killing and violence. The reverend got right to it - he said this is the best opportunity to show and encourage the positive messages that these artists can portray rather than always assuming the worst from them. That's so true.

  •  Terrific! (none / 0)

The GOPers would probably say this smacks of anarchy, but I think it's absolutely brilliant.

I was listening to the pop station at work today and the worst song ever came on. No, not Ashley Simpson but some song with Nelly (the rap artist) and Tim McGraw (the country singer). It is horrible and I'd be surprised if a Dylan and Eminem song would be much better. By the way if you hear the DJ announce the airing of the Nelly/Mcgraw song don't listen for more than 10 seconds or you will try to destroy your radio.

What might be cool'd be eminem sampling Dylan, maybe "Tangled Up in Blue" or something and rapping over it. Have you heard J-Zee's "Grey Album" (I don't know if you're a hiphop fan or not)? Allegedly it's filled with illegal Beatle's samples, and is said to be the shiznit. Haven't heard it yet myself, but looking forward to it.

But Eminem should perform it. I'm a huge Dylan fan, but his voice is way too gravelly now for a duet with Eminem. It just wouldn't match well.

Still, I'd love it if they co-wrote a rap. They'd have to find a subject they both care about though. It would be one of the oddest collaborations in history though.

  •  Great Video - Channeling the Anger (none / 0)

Watched this last night... it kicks ass!  I'm 33, so I'm way too old for hip hop (more like 1980s Brit-pop), but this is a great video.  Just wish it had come out a week before most states registration deadlines, rather than a week before the election.

The best thing about this, IMHO, is that it channels the anger in a positive direction.  It brings up the reasons to be angry, and then, just as you think the mob is about to start kicking some major butt on the bad guys... they... show up the the polls and VOTE!
