David Kay: "Game, Set, Match"

Thu Oct 28, 2004 at 07:38:34 PM PDT

David Kay, Iraq weapons inspector for the Bush Administration, just appeared on CNN and was asked by Aaron Brown to review the new video filmed on April 18, 2003, one month after the invasion and 8 days after US Troops first arrived at Al Qaqaa.

He was asked about the video which shows the seal. He said that they are indeed IAEA seals and he's seen nothing else like them in IRAQ. He then went on to say that only the explosives in question would have been sealed because of their potency. He then said that other parts of the video show clearly that these were the types of explosives in question.

He was asked if it was "Game, Set, Match". He replied yes, "Game, Set, Match".

In a final blow to recent conservative spin he was asked if they were classified as WMD. He replied point blank, "absolutely not."

We could do a lot worse than having Brown on in that evening time slot.  He and Lou Dobbs and Begala give me some hope for CNN, and of the three only Begala is clearly liberal.

As for KSTP, they did themselves proud with this one.  That photographer took some awesome photos.  He seemed to have made sure to get some good wide shots and some close-ups of the seals on the doors and the labels.

KSTP is NOT a "liberal" station, either in ownership or editorial slant.  And the anchor person you see in the video (Cindy Bruccato) is well-known in the Twin Cities.  She was an anchor in the glory days of the local NBC affiliate years ago and then went to work as spokesperson for a Republican MN governor (Arne Carlson, I think it was) before she returned to reading the news.

    •  This video is key (none / 0)

Repugs like Marc Racinot were on Larry King Live still trying to push the story that the explosives were gone before we got there.  Racinot was using the satellite photos and the debunked claims that our troops didn't see any explosives when we got there. Larry King brought up this videotape and Racinot simply continued his lies.

"U.S. military commanders estimated last fall that Iraqi military sites contained 650,000 to 1 million tons of explosives, artillery shells, aviation bombs and other ammunition. The Bush administration cited official figures this week showing about 400,000 tons destroyed or in the process of being eliminated. That leaves the whereabouts of more than 250,000 tons unknown . . . . . "There is something truly absurd about focusing on 377 tons of rather ordinary explosives, regardless of what actually happened at al Qaqaa," (said) . . . a senior analyst at the Center for Strategic and International Studies"

Yes, perhaps so, but if it has awaken the American people to how just unsafe George W. Bush has made the world, then let it serve as an apt metaphor for the deadly reality this reckless president has unleashed.

Poor Aaron Brown.  He tried so hard not to let it show, but you could tell he was thinking, "Take that, assholes."

    •  Excellent (none / 0)

I'm sure there are a lot of reporters royally pissed off at BushCo's arrogance & hubris, only amplified by the TANG memos/Dan Rather episode - so that now Bush openly hints at conspiracy and deliberate bias in major news organizations.

So take that, indeed.  It's about time.

      •  Knee jerk defence (none / 0)

Think that conservative pundits have preached that the media is liberally biased that it has become reflexive. They created the frame a long time ago, and use it well. If the media has an effective story critical of the President, then someone says it's an example of media bias. They live in a world where nothing can hurt their faith in their leader. Nothing he says is wrong, because he says so. Fortunately, it has become so obvious now that Kerry can credibly say that the President is out of touch.
Keep hammering on the facts. Demand an explanation, and when none is given question his ability to govern.
  •  Recorded it and I'll try to transcribe (4.00 / 9)

They start off saying something about "let's review the facts and keep politics out of it."

Brown asks Kay straight out if it's "Game/Set/Match" in regard to the KSTP tape.  Kay says yes, at least in regard to this one bunker.

He says that the tape shows a bunker and a seal and a group of solkdiers opening it up.  He says that the frightening thing is that the soldiers left after opening up the bunker.  "If you open an arms bunker, you own it...at least in terms of security."

He thought they probably didn't know they had HMX, but they knew they had explosives.

Iraq is awash with tens of thousands of tons of explosives after the invasion according to Kay.

Was there any reason not to have anticipated that there would be weapons like this?  Absolutely not.  That was one of the best-documented sites in the country.

These are not classified as a WMD.  This is not a proliferation issue.  It's very dangerous because it bblows things up, but it had nothing to do with illegal arms.

The truly sad and tragic piece of this story is the irony of -- if it's a bad day for Bush, as today is especially after seeing Kay on Aaron Brown, it is a very bad day for Iraq and our troops.  The potential danger and threat of these missing explosives isn't being discounted by anyone.

Aaron Brown was just reviewing mroning papers and pointed out the new Wash Times article on the Russian claim. •  Wait a minute. Don't let this slip by. (4.00 / 33)

In a final blow to recent conservative spin he was asked if they were classified as WMD. He replied point blank, "absolutely not."

There's a fine point to be made here, and we shouldn't miss it. It may not change the story as most people digest it, but you know us, we love nuance.

These explosives are, by themselves, not WMD. No doubt about that.

But let's ask ourselves, why would these conventional explosives be under seal by the International ATOMIC ENERGY Agency?

They're under seal because they're powerful and potent enough to be used as a triggering device for a nuclear weapon. In the fuzzy thinking of the administration, that would make their stockpiling a "WMD-related program activity."

Now, what that means is that had the administration made it a priority to secure these explosives -- which they were specifically warned of and pointed to by the IAEA, an arm of the U.N. -- they would have had a tremendous public relations opportunity to exploit. They would have seized -- on camera, thanks to embedded reporters -- materiel that even the doves and foot-draggers at the much-maligned United Nations agreed was evidence of Saddam Hussein's nuclear ambitions.

    Got that?

They had a chance (albeit a shaky one that wouldn't have stood thorough analysis) to show the world that not only was Saddam pursuing the bomb, but that the U.N. knew it and still tried to coddle him. It would have been a huge P.R. coup.

The fact that they didn't do this tells you all you'll ever need to know about the credence WMD claims were actually given, even among the very people who made them.

We always knew they were full of shit on that score. We just never dreamed they'd tie themselves in such knots that they'd one day blurt it out.

    •  Bingo (4.00 / 5)

      You are exactly right.

They had the opportunity -- even though WMD programs weren't the excuse yet at that point; they were still claiming that weapons of mass distraction acutally existed, so this didn't appeal to them on perhaps two accounts: it had already been locked up by the IAEA and it wasn't a WMD, but a related component.

Obviously they can't think more than two steps ahead pr recall the previous two steps.

At least partial truth has been revealed -- that WMD was not the reason for invading Iraq (even though it was the only one given at the time). When will the rest of the truth be revealed (personal vendeta and oil greed)?

          •  If I was a wingnut (none / 0)

I'd be talking about how Iraq had hundreds of thousands of tons of explosives, the equivalent of a few nukes, and how just one pound of this stuff could take down an airliner. I'd be talking about how dangerous these stockpiles were and how great it is that we took them out of Saddam's hands.

But did you hear anyone, even Hannity, talking about this stuff? Nope. It wasn't until this week that we learn about these tons of high-powered explosives. And we learn about them only because the Bush team didn't secure these bunkers and didn't keep these explosives away from the terrorists.

Think about it.  By May of 2003 the Bush team knew that thousands of tons of these high-powered explosives had been looted. THAT'S why they didn't trumpet these findings as proof of Saddam's dangerous capability -- because our war caused these explosives to fall into enemy hands!!

      •  Here's what I heard (none / 1)

I believe the person who told me this believed it and he had access to insider views though not necessarily high level info. Judge it as you will. Here's  the chronology as my source tells it:

        1. Saudi Arabia 'invited' us to leave - meaning no more bases
        2. this meant we were about to loose our ability to block Iraq  as well as the ability to do fly overs easily
        3. Invading Iraq was the solution to both problems.

Part of this jibes - the Saudi's DID ask us to leave, but it's also known that BushCo wanted to go into Iraq much earlier so my view of this info is that the Saudi decision pushed them to move ASAP which was why it was so hurried. Beyond that, invading Iraq jibes perfectly with the needs of big oil and the neocon global domination fantasy.

      •  Isn't it wonderful? (4.00 / 3)

        What a gift!

We found out relatively quickly that the "liberation of the Iraqi people" thing was nonsense, when we learned that we had re-established the "rape rooms" and passed the days torturing the locals.

We knew almost as soon as it was uttered that the "close ties to al Qaeda" thing was bullshit.

But we never got a really clear indication that even the administration didn't believe the WMD claims, or at least didn't really care much about them if they did, until just now. I really didn't think they'd be so generous with that one. It seemed to be working so well with people, this idea that it was at least plausible that it might not have been a lie, but rather just a big misunderstanding. An "intelligence failure."

How fantastic, how truly unexpected this is! I thought they'd be able to cling to the gray area between "outright lie" and "bad intelligence" forever if they wanted to. Or at least until November 3rd. But no such luck! Too bad, so sad. They really had the American people going on that one for a while. Hoo-wee!

Well, one day we'll all look back on this and laugh, eh? Boy howdy.

"No, Mr Pretzledent, I am not blaming our troops. I'm blaming you and I'm blaming your administration -- Donald Rumsfeld and Condoleeza Rice and Dick Cheney among other -- for not supporting our troops and sacrificing them in your personal vendetta and to feed your insatiable, satanic hunger for more oil. You, Mr Chimperor, are the one who must take responsiblity."

        Mmmm.... five more days.

A la Ralph Wiggum: Your hands smell like blood, Furious George.   :-)

      They've got it backwards.

They better hope that they're with the Lord.

      Pricks.

Why do they get so defensive about it being reported?  If no one really cared about it, it couldn't do much damage (ala Mary Cheney).

Don't like XOM and OPEC? What have YOU done to reduce your oil consumption? Hot air does NOT constitute a renewable resource!

  •  Drudge Report (none / 0)

Is linking to the NY Times story now (actually, as of a minute ago, he had the headline up but it wasn't linking anywhere).

This will be major news right up to the election.  As the freepers say above, this will dominate the unday talk shows, as it should.

    Game. Set. Match.

    I love it.

  •  A Kerry surrogate (4.00 / 4)

could not have been any better.

He even said point blank that this was certainly HMX - something which I haven't seen anyone knowledge confirm today.  Everyone here discussed the 1.1.D tag with the rational "it's on a list of 50 other explosives"....

..but hey - if Bush's hand-picked inspector says it's HMX, says it should have been secured, says this "you unseal it, you bought it", who am I to argue.

I have to be honest - despite being Catholic, I'm not very religiouys (or is - "as a Catholic" ;-), but this almost seems like God is sort of stretching that free will theory to it limits...

Almost like "Alright numnuts, I'm getting pissed up here.  Do you get it now, or do I have to suspend free will for a few days?"

I guess everyone's got their own blog now.

OK, I love this angle you're on.

There was an episode of The West Wing, where Sheen calls in his priest for guidance on whether or not to stay a federal execution.

      The priest tells this story:

A farmer heard on the radio that lfoods were coming and everyone should leave the area or drown. "I'm a man of faith and God will protect me," the farmer said.

The rains came. The police came by and told the farmer to leave. "I'm a man of faith and God will protect me," the farmer said.

The water came up to the house. A boat came by and told the farmer to get in. "I'm a man of faith and God will protect me," the farmer said.

The water came up to the roof. A helicopter came and lowered a ladder. "I'm a man of faith and God will protect me," the farmer said.

The man died. In heaven, he demanded to see God. "Why didn't you save me? I'm a man of faith and I thought you would protect me," the farmer said.

God says, "I sent you readio report, the police, a boat, and a helicopter. What are you doing here?"

Are these not enough divine signs to tell people that the shrub not only needs to be out of the house, but in The Hague?

      :-)

A few days ago, on another forum, I sent this post, referring to an atheist on that forum, whose surname is McMullen.   I'm a Catholic, and quite religious, and McMullen and I often debate the truth or otherwise of Catholicism.   Anyway, this is what I wrote, not knowing that God was going to come up the al-Qaqaa fiasco (oh yeah--thanks, God):

As www.sweetjesusihatebilloreilly.com put it recently, sometimes God works in mysterious ways, and other times He just kicks serious ass! ;-)

Bill Bennett, conservative family values sage and drug czar, exposed as having an obscene gambling
        addiction (millions of dollars blown).

Lush Rimjob, right wing talk radio legend (aka
"a big fat idiot"), exposed as having prescription
        drug addiction.

And now Bill outed as a phone sex pervert.

Thank you, GOD!   Now if you could just do a wee
        number on Dubya, even McMullen might come around. ;-}
