At this point the Democratic Party looks split between the liberal Dean/Gore wing and the moderate DLC/Clinton wing. It is not clear to me that either wing can unify the party. A nomination victory by Dean may turn off the middle, while a nomination victory by Clark or Lieberman may turn off the liberals. Even with a unified party this election is a long shot. Should the Democratic Party write this election off and lay the groundwork for 2006 and 2008?
If we do write the election off then how should we use this election campaign to position the party for the future? What are the issues we should build the party around in order to unify the party and add the new voters necessary to win in the future?
