Explaining why same sex marriage is so evil, President Bush said:
"Our second great responsibility to our children and grandchildren is to honor and to pass along the values that sustain a free society. So many of my generation, after a long journey, have come home to family and faith, and are determined to bring up responsible, moral children. Government is not the source of these values, but government should never undermine them."
(emphasis mine)
Sure most likely Bush was just pandering - and think how sad things are that we have to resort to hoping that the President was lying about his beliefs to attack an minority in the State of the Union - but suppose he's not. The government should never undermine family and faith?
Here are some examples off the top of my head of the government undermining faith of various religions:
(1) Public schools still allow the teaching of evolution in violation of the beliefs of many churches.
(2) They deliver mail on Saturdays, violating the Jewish Sabbath.
(3) Public high schools have sponsored dances where boys and girls are encouraged to dance together in violation of Orthodox beliefs.
(4) Stadiums built with tax dollars serve hotdogs made out of pork in violation of Muslim and Jewish kosher laws.
(5) Public swimming pools encourage immodest dress in women.
(6) The Department of Defense violates Quaker beliefs on an hourly basis.
What? You say that no one is forced to eat a hot dog or go to the dance or join the military? True. However no one is forced to marry someone of the same gender either. If the mere allowing of something against a belief to happen is undermining it, then all of these should be outlawed too. I wonder when we can expect the "Hotdog Elimination Act."
Please let it be that the President was just an opportunist, not a theocrat!
